For many years, the Gucci red moccasin has symbolized a must have. Today the black or brown variant is preferred, it fits in very different styles.
To understand perfectly what mocassino stand for and what it means properly we need to know its history.
It was born in the thirties, initially as a sporty and informal shoe. The moccasin, at first unlined, quickly became popular, today it is inserted in classic shoes, even if not suitable for formal occasions.
The first inventors of the moccasin were the Indians of North America, they wrapped their feet with a piece of soft leather that rose on the hips.
The Spaulding family (of American origin) spread the shape of the moccasin much more similar to the modern one. They begins to produce footwear inspired by those of Norwegian milk milkers, in turn inspired by those of the Lapps who, unlike the Indians, wore footwear made from different pieces of leather sewn together.
The moccasin boomed in the 1930s. John R. Bass was responsible for the invention of the lip-shaped mask that appears on these shoes.
In the 1950s the moccasin was adopted by American college students (the “Ivy League” style began to spread all over the world) which they renamed it Penny loafer precisely because they used to slip a penny inside the vamp.
After the Second World War, Italian cobblers adapted this much lighter and softer shoe to an Italian style than traditional classic shoes (Oxford, Derby …).

Per molti anni il mocassino rosso di Gucci ha simboleggiato un must have, anche se oggi viene preferita la variante nera o marrone la quale si accorda a stili diversissimi.
Per comprendere al meglio cos’è e cosa rappresenta il mocassino, bisogna conoscere la sua storia!
Nasce negli anni trenta, inizialmente come scarpa sportiva ed informale. Il mocassino, in un primo momento non foderato, diventa rapidamente popolare. Ad oggi viene inserita nelle scarpe classiche, anche se non adatta alle occasioni formali.
Il primo modello di mocassino risale agli Indiani d’America i quali utilizzavano un lembo di pelle avvolto sapientemente al piede che si alzava sui fianchi.
A diffondere la forma del mocassino molto più simile a quella moderna è la famiglia Spaulding (di origine Americana). comincia a produrre calzature che si ispirano a quelle dei mungitori di latte norvegesi, ispirandosi a loro volta a quelle dei Lapponi che, a differenza degli Indiani, indossavano calzature ricavate da diversi pezzi di cuoio cuciti assieme.
Il mocassino ebbe un vero e proprio boom negli anni ’30. Ed è a John R. Bass che si deve l’invenzione della mascherina a forma di labbra che appare su queste calzature.
Negli anni ’50 il mocassino viene adottato dagli studenti dei college Americani (comincia a diffondersi in tutto il mondo lo stile “Ivy League”) che lo ribattezzano Penny loafer proprio perché erano soliti infilare un penny all’interno della mascherina.
Dopo la seconda guerra mondiale i calzolai italiani adattarono questa scarpa molto più leggera e morbida ad uno stile italiano rispetto alle tradizionali scarpe classiche (Oxford, Derby…).
